How to Download Your Snapchat Data (My Data)
In this guide
Snapchat keeps a lot of information about your account: your Memories, your chats, your profile details and more. Snapchat lets you ask for a copy of it. The feature is called My Data. This guide shows how to request it, what to expect, and how to keep the file safe.
Why request your Snapchat data?
- To back up your Memories before you change phones or leave Snapchat.
- To see what information Snapchat holds about you.
- To keep your chat history or account details in one place.
You can only request the data of your own account. If you only want to move your photos and videos to your phone, the quicker route is to save your Snapchat Memories to your camera roll.
What is in a Snapchat data download?
On the My Data page you choose what to include. Depending on your account and on what Snapchat offers at the time, the choices can include:
- Your Memories (photos and videos you saved).
- Your chat history.
- Your account and profile information.
- Information about how you used the app.
Before you start
- Make sure the email address on your Snapchat account is verified. The download link is sent there.
- Use a device and network you trust. The file can contain private messages.
- Check that you have enough free space. A download with many Memories can be large.
How to request your data
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile picture, then tap the settings icon. Under account actions, choose My Data. You can also go to the Snapchat accounts website in your browser and log in.
- Log in if Snapchat asks you to.
- Choose the data you want. To get your photos and videos, switch on the Memories option.
- Choose a date range, or all time, if Snapchat offers one.
- Check the email address where the link will be sent.
- Submit the request.
How to download the file
- Wait for the email from Snapchat. This can take some time, so do not request it again straight away.
- Open the email and use the link. Snapchat may ask you to log in again.
- Download the file or files. A big export can arrive as several parts.
- Open the downloaded file. On a computer, unzip it. On a phone, a file manager or the Files app can open it.
Keep your data safe
A Snapchat data download can contain private messages and personal details. Treat it like a password.
- Do not share the download link.
- Save the file in a private folder, and consider a password-protected archive.
- If you used a shared or public computer, delete the file when you are done.
- Download it soon, because the link may stop working after a few days.
If you do not receive the email
- Look in your spam or promotions folder.
- Check that the email address on your account is the one you are checking, and that it is verified.
- Wait a while longer. Large accounts take longer.
- Try the request again later, or ask Snapchat Support.
Frequently asked questions
Does requesting my data delete my account?
No. Requesting a copy only gives you a download. Your account stays as it is.
Is it free?
Yes. Requesting your own data from Snapchat does not cost anything.
How long does it take?
It depends on how much data your account has. Snapchat will send an email when the file is ready.
Can I get another person's Snapchat data this way?
No. You can only request the data of your own account. Please only save content that belongs to you or that you have permission to save.
Why is the file so large?
Photos and videos from Memories take the most space. If the file is too big, request it again without Memories, or export Memories in smaller batches from the app.
